Understanding grief and loss in children and an explanation of counselling skills

One of the most popular of the training courses run by LCGL has been 'Understanding grief and loss in children and an explanation of counselling skills', which has been made available to all teachers in Lincolnshire, with training staff at LCGL running two separate courses, one aimed at primary school staff and one aimed at secondary school staff.

Course Outline

The 'Understanding grief and loss in children and an explanation of counselling skills' course takes place over a day and is delivered from our counselling centre.

Course Aims

To understand what grief and loss is
To identify the difference between primary and secondary losses
Understand how children respond to grief according to their age and development
Know what complicated grief is
Identify ways of supporting a child through grief both as an individual and as a school
Identify some of the barriers to effective listening
Identify some of the key skills used in counselling, such as focusing and summarising
Know the difference between empathy and sympathy
Identify forms of your own self-care
